报告摘要/ Summary:

Unlike animals, plants lack visual and auditory systems. Instead, they have a different way to communicate over long distances: they release and detect volatile gases. The most thoroughly understood gas in this process is ethylene, a simple plant hormone. Recently, we uncovered a striking evolutionary feature of ethylene receptor: beyond merely detecting ethylene gas, the receptors also possess an ancient ability to sense cellular stress, specifically changes in ER redox states. We also discovered that a group of ethylene receptors function as a novel type of calcium channel. Beyond ethylene, we have used roses as a model to identify several other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) mediating interplant communication. We are currently investigating how the sense of smell helps plants adapt to their environments and survive abiotic stresses.
